People’s Parliament led by Mr. Robert Kharshiing, Members of Parliament of Rajya Sabha (Upper House) and the Convener of the Indian Parliamentarian’s Forum for Democracy in Burma and over 80,000 tribal indigenous people from Meghalaya State together passed the resolution in support of peaceful Democratic Movement in Burma which was held on 6 th October at Sacred Forest, Mawphlang in Shilong, Meghalaya State, North Eastern part of India.
As India is one of the largest democracy in the world and also India and China are neighbor countries, to use its leverage to influence the Burmese military to restraint from using violence on the protestors and also to put its influential pressure and intervention to stop further bloodshed in Burma, said the solution paper.
India has the responsibility to secure the release of Madam Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners and support the peaceful movement for the restoration of democracy in Burma, the paper added.
The People’s Parliament initiated by the People’s Grassroots Democracy Advisory in 2004, aims of creating a platform for poor and downtrodden people to air their grievances and also to make them aware of their rights.
Ms.Nirmala Deshpande MP (Rajya Sabha),Mr.Mani Charenamei, MP of Manipur, Mr PA Sangma, MP of Meghalaya and former Speaker Lok Sabha (Lower House), and Mr. Dinesh Trivedi, MP from West Bengal State were among the prominent leaders present at the occasion.
Mr. Robert Kharshiig told the reporter from the Mizzima News that, “in coming section of Parliament, we will collect signatures of many MPs to take more active stand on Myanmar (Burma). India should not forget of Democracy in the largest Democracy and we can not be expected to sit in the Security Council, if we are siding with the military junta and repressive regime. This is not a good example, moral and spiritual values count for more than mere gas. Gas is very temporary but ethical and moral values are more important”.
Burmese delegation comprised of the members form the Women’s League of Burma and Shwe Gas Movement attended the parliament and proposed the draft resolution on Burma. During the program, they also organized the photo exhibition and signature campaign in support of democracy movement in Burmaa
